5 Alternative Ways to Produce Energy

From body heat to algae, to the discovery of some bizarre but innovative sources for renewable energy production.

For the production of energy, various materials and methods have been used over time. In the beginning, the wood was exploited, then it turned to coal and finally, to oil. Then, with the discovery of alternative resources to fossil fuels for energy production, the use of renewable energies, such as solar or wind energy, has spread to generate electricity and heat. But there are also several other alternative methods and elements with which it is possible to produce renewable energy.

How to Produce Energy through the Human Body?

An alternative method for energy production has been developed in the Netherlands. That is the use of kinetic energy created by groups of people which is then transformed into electricity. In this country, special floors have been invented, then inserted in a nightclub, which can forfeit energy from the passage of the feet. The ability to produce energy, therefore, derives from the fact that the more you dance, the more electricity is created.

Then, the mayor of London had another intuition to use the human body in an alternative way, and therefore for energy production. The idea was to transform the excess heat produced by the underground into a source to heat the water of London homes. This initiative was also used as a model in Paris and Stockholm, where similar proposals are under consideration.

How to Produce Energy from Coffee?

A very particular method for producing energy for free is coffee. Indeed, researchers from the University of Bath have discovered that coffee grounds could become the perfect source for making biofuel.

Coffee grounds are among the most voluminous organic waste in circulation: today they are used, for example, for the production of Pellets, but they have great potential for energy production: an idea that has been put into practice in recent years regards the use of coffee for biogas production. According to some estimates, from each ton, it is possible to obtain around 600 kWh.

How to Produce Energy from Jellyfish?

It is now the sea that offers an alternative and original source for energy production. This novelty comes from jellyfish: these organisms contain a very particular protein, called Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), or green fluorescent protein, which can be used for energy production. It is a very economical alternative to other renewable solutions, such as solar energy: it has been discovered that a drop of GFP placed in a silicon circuit that is exposed to ultraviolet light, causes the movement of electrons in the circuit e, therefore, the production of electricity.

How to Produce Energy from Alcohol?

The Swedes are very witty people, capable of giving a positive outcome to an unpleasant event by turning it into an opportunity. In fact, in 2006, as many as 700,000 liters of contraband alcohol were confiscated: these were products designed to escape a very tax-free alcohol tax. Instead of getting rid of these drinks permanently, alcohol has been turned into biogas and used to power a factory. The super-fuel produced from alcohol was then used to fuel thousands of trucks, buses, and even a train. A great result for a product that risked being thrown away forever!

At the moment, there is only the beginning of research on new materials to support energy production, but the future could be really bright for some of them — for ones who could make the same fortune as alternative and already established sources of energy.
