Wisconsin lawmakers span gamut of trip-taking habits

WASHINGTON -- During the past 4 1/2 years, the Wisconsin congressional delegation took 59 privately funded trips worth nearly $271,000.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls, topped the list with 16 trips worth about $126,400, paid for by a handful of special interest groups, including the Islamic Free Market Institute, the International Management and Development Institute and the National Association of Broadcasters. Destinations included Qatar, Liechtenstein, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Japan, Guatemala and three trips to Las Vegas.

Reps. Dave Obey, D-Wausau, and Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, each took 11 trips. While seven of Obey's trips were international, all of Baldwin's destinations were domestic, except for a trip to Israel in August 2003.Obey's trips totaled $65,800, Baldwin's $25,800.

Rep. Tom Petri, R-Fond du Lac, took 10 privately funded trips, for a total of about $8,500; Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, took five, totaling $24,900; Reps. Mark Green, R-Green Bay, and Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, each took two, totaling $15,300 and $3,000, respectively; and Rep. Jerry Kleczka, D-Milwaukee, filed no disclosures for privately funded travel.

Of the state's two Democratic senators, Russ Feingold traveled twice to California, for a total price tag of $1,100, while Herb Kohl reported no privately funded trips.
